Perimenopause — the transition leading up to menopause — can bring a cascade of changes to a woman’s body: hot flashes, mood shifts, disrupted sleep, and declining muscle mass. Many women find these changes frustrating and often assume they’re simply “part of aging.” While it’s true that hormones naturally fluctuate during this phase, science shows that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be a safe and effective way to ease symptoms, preserve health, and even optimize strength and sleep.

Perimenopause and muscle loss

One of the most noticeable effects of perimenopause is the gradual loss of lean muscle mass and strength. Estrogen and testosterone both play key roles in maintaining muscle protein synthesis.
